Description |
Market Street near Noble's Island, looking off in the direction to Market Square, Portsmouth, NH. The farthest visible building is W. Henry Smith's grocery store at 260 Market Street (previously 110 Market Street). Within a few years of this photograph, the business moved closer to Market Square. Building at center was known as Walker's Taven at the corner of Market and Green streets, approximately 298 Market Street (previously 120-122 Market Street). The sign above states, "Market St. House, All Wines and Liquors, Thomas Leary." For the first half of the 19th century, Jonathan J. Walker ran the Market St. House, and the establishment was known to many as Walker's Tavern. The building in the foreground, 318 Market Street (previously 128 Market Street), was home to several businesses including saloons such as Thomas Lynskey's "Sample Room." An unidentified woman is in one of the windows. By 1904, the building had partially burned, and by 1910, a lumber shed was on the property. Photo taken between 1894 and 1895. Present site of the Sheraton Hotel. |
